International Anthem Presents Moon Bros.—four travelled/travailed Chicago free players in residence on Tuesdays, November 11, 18, 25 and December 2. Formed and led by guitarist Matt Schneider, the foursome has been conspiring of late on a compositional project developed publicly at Logan Square barroom Analogue.

Schneider’s work under the Moon Bros. moniker is time-out-of-mind cooing folk played at painstakingly patient speeds—a decorous and underheard contribution to the ambient folk fray. Perhaps his recordings are projections of future scores to Cormac McCarthy adaptations; perhaps front porch Dust Bowl blues gospel. Either way, Schneider is a pointedly preeminent experimental guitarist in this day and age.

This iteration of Moon Bros. is a network of a few high-minded Chicago improvisers: Matthew Lux (double bass), who has made regular with the likes of Iron & Wine, Exploding Star Orchestra and Pharaoh Sanders, and Dan Bitney (percussion), a continuing member of Tortoise.

Sam Wagster (pedal steel) has contributed string compositions to a number of forefront Chicago groups including Fruit Bats & Angel Olsen and has seen a flourish of activity recently performing improvised material with Roommate head Kent Lambert.

Let’s see where they take things in November. Thanks for listening.
